Avocado Trees are very popular fruits in Ghana and many African countries.

It is also popularly known for its healthy and delicious avocado fruits. avocado tree is easy to grow and self-pollinating. Avocados have a very high nutritive level.

It’s the only fruit that has mono-unsaturated fat. This is reported to increase good cholesterol (HDL) and also decrease bad cholesterol  (LDL).

Avocados possess high levels of fiber, protein and vitamin C also One Thing is that avocados are readily needed in the market.

Pear Management

In order to promote development of lateral branches, & low headed trees, training should be carried out by heading back. Buds should also be removed to enable desired spacing among the plants. Prune trees and cut out dead wood after harvest. Thin fruits in boom years to control biennial bearing and enhance fruit quality in early stages.

You can look at pruning in three stages. During the initial parts of plantation, pruning is done lightly to remove undesired water sprout, dead or diseased branches.

Also in the early stages of bearing, corrective pruning is carried out to remove dead or diseased branches to facilitate plant growth.

In full bearing, unproductive plants are also removed.

 

 

Pest and Disease Controls

Pear is less impacted with pest diseases. Not withstanding, some common pear pests includes Mealy bugs, mites and scale insects and codling moth. These can be all controlled by spraying recommended insecticides and pesticides.

Some common diseases are Root rot is the main disease of avocado tree. It is caused by Phytophthora cinnamon which kill the trees and it can also be controlled by soaking the soil with recommended fungicide. 2.  Cercospora spot (Cercospora purpurea), Black spot (Colletotricum gloeosporioides) all of which attack the leaves, roots and fruits also. They can also be mitigated by spraying copper fungicides to the leaves to deal with the fungi.

 

 

Harvesting

The harvesting period depends on the variety of pear seed planted. When the pear tree is grown, fruits is expected once a year. Mature avocado fruits do not ripen until harvested. The longer the fruit remain on the tree the faster it will ripen after harvest.

Maturity is indicated when the part of the fruit stalk closest to the fruit turns black or brown. Manual clipping is the main harvesting method for avocado. Harvesting can also be done by pulling or snapping. It can be consumed freshly if the intention is for home use, but if not it has to be canned and well packed for the market.

Average fruit yield/ha= 14tonnes= 14,000kg

Percentage loss= 5%

Available yield= 95% x 14,000= 13300

Farm gate price= GHc 0.5/kg

Income per year= 13,300×0.5= GHc6650

Income for 4th and 5th years= 2x 6,650

=GHc 13,300

Net income after 5th year = 13,300-6,204

=GHc 7,096
