Six Districts in the Central Region are to benefit from the first phase of the National Medical Outreach Services (NMOS), a new community health campaign targeted at improving the health of every Ghanaian.
The Districts, including Ekumfi, Mfantseman, Upper Denkyira East and West, would routinely be engaged with interactive health education and screening, emergency treatment for general medical conditions, ophthalmology, dentistry and hearing.
Dubbed ‘Onuad?’ the outreach campaign was instituted by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as one of the means to bridge the equity gaps between cities and the remote areas in health care delivery.
Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur launching the campaign in Cape Coast on Wednesday, noted the critical importance of healthcare on human development index and indicated that Government would do its best to ensure that citizens remained healthy.
He said the Government for the past five years had invested heavily in the health sector with the construction of many health facilities under various stages of completion.
The Minister of Health, Mr Alex Segbefia stated that the Medical Outreach Services fell in line with the Government’s decentralization process.
He said ensuring quality health care was a collective responsibility and urged Ghanaians to collaborate with the Health Ministry to ensure the sustainability of the health outreach programme.
The Regional Minister, Mr. Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, said the initiative by the MOH indicated the great importance Government attached to healthcare of people living in remote communities.
He noted that the Medical Outreach Services would cater for the unserved areas in deprived communities in the six districts of the Region without cost.
He admonished the people of Central Region to take issues of sanitation very serious so that sanitation related diseases such as malaria and cholera would be prevented.
At the end of the launch, hundreds of people in the Cape Coast Metropolis were screened and treated for general medical care, dental, eye and hearing services.
