Aspiring Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Sam George Nartey, has indicated that a project to de-silt a community dam in the area to improve the availability of water has started.

The presidential staffer, who beat incumbent MP for the area, E T Mensah, to represent the governing NDC in the forthcoming November polls, has assured his constituents that he will fix the problems in the area.

According to him, workers have been deployed at Mangotsonya for the two-week exercise, which will be extended to Ahwiam, Kponkpo and Ayetepa.

Through a message posted on his Facebook wall on 18 February 2016, Mr Nartey explained: “The rains have been our constant source of dependable water and the dams serve as reservoirs to store the water. We are hopeful that with the onset of the rains soon, some immediate respite would be achieved.”

Several areas in the region have been hit by water scarcity. Some communities, who rely on wells, have had their water sources dried up due to the prolonged Harmattan in the country.

Some communities do not have access to potable water as they have not been connected to the pipelines of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

According to Mr Nartey, his team “would continue the intermittent supply of water using tankers, as we look to work with the Ghana Water Company to expedite the laying of new pipelines to serve these areas”.

He further revealed that the “Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing had pledged to drill a number of boreholes in the new settlements in the Prampram area”.

He, however, stated that his team would explore other options for the Ahwiam area because “it is not feasible to drill the boreholes in the community and its surroundings due to the proximity to the sea and the salty nature of the ground water”.
