Pupils to receive 10,000 free sandals – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama’s promise of free sandals for some basic pupils is set to be fulfilled this year. The President, who announced this on Thursday, made the promise in 2014 when he visited the Kumasi DIHOC Shoe factory, where he was clearly fascinated by the products being manufactured there.

Delivering his third state of the nation address in Parliament on Thursday, President Mahama announced that 10,000 sandals will be distributed for free this year. He noted that this amongst other initiatives was part of Government’s commitment towards improving quality education and accessibility.

To compliment the free sandals for needy pupils, the President also announced that half a million school uniforms will be distributed to pupils. 30,000 computers will also be given to various school laboratories and to improve ICT education.

Additionally, 15 million exercise books and six million text books will also be distributed to schools.

On Senior High School education, President Mahama said about 367,000 students will benefit from the government’s progressive free Senior High School policy starting in September this year.

“Government will begin the implementation of the progressive free SHS at the start of the 2015/16 academic year…367,000 day students will benefit from the progressive free SHS…and they will pay no fees”.

President Mahama expressed elation at the BECE re-sit policy at the JHS level which was introduced this year by the Ghana Education Ministry and the examinations body, WAEC. He was particularly awed by the decision of a 40 year old man to take part in the exams so he can seek higher education. A total of 1,181 candidates took part in the maiden re-sit examination.

The President noted that enrolment of pupils at the basic level had increased due to the direct intervention by the government.

President Mahama added that government’s focus on quality education requires the enhancement of teaching skills, adding that he is ready to invest in teachers to ensure that they get the required skills to educate school children.
