MTN launches programme to support teachers

The MTN Ghana Foundation has launched a Teachers’ Improvement Award Programme (TIAP) which is aimed at supporting 100 teachers over a 10-year period.

The TIAP seeks to improve the skills of teachers across the country to professionally grow in Science, Mathematics and English education.

The Acting Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Mr Samuel Koranteng, at the launch of the programme in Accra, said the foundation was committing GH¢125,000 annually to improve the capacity of teachers in the chosen disciplines in selected tertiary institutions in the country.

The programme will financially assist teachers who teach in first and second cycle public institutions to upgrade their education at the First Degree or Masters level.

Mr Koranteng said MTN arrived at the chosen subject areas because they played an important role in the development of society by creating advantages in innovation for free thinking graduates.

“Look at what we take for granted these days in our everyday lives — the internet, mobile phones, vehicles, computers, printers, microwaves, electricity, medications, to mention just a few. All these came to us from science and mathematics, engineering and technology. They actually came from students who pursued these disciplines in school,” he said.

He also noted that the graduate and post graduate education would greatly improve the teachers’ skills and better motivate students to positively contribute to building the society.

He said the awards programme was opened to both regular and sandwich students, and that the submission of applications was opened from May 28 to June 5, 2015.

“It is the firm belief of the MTN Ghana Foundation that beneficiaries of the TIAP would come back equipped with higher educational skills to transform the realities of the classroom as we know it today into a better and more conducive place of study,” he added.

The Acting Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Stephen Adu, also noted that teachers were always critical because they were always with the students, hence if their capacity was enhanced, it would help the students as well.

He said the GES had identified Mathematics and Science as subjects that needed special attention because they were very crucial to the development of the country.
