Ghanaian international John Mensah on Friday March 5 signed for Swedish second tier side Athletic FC United for an undisclosed fee.
Mensah had a successful playing career with French Ligue 1 clubs Rennes and Lyon before moving to England, where he played in the Premiership for Sunderland.
He returned to Lyon on loan in August 2011 and joined Rennes again in 2013 as a free agent.
His last club was FC Nitra in Slovenia where he made his debut in March 2014.
A former captain of the national team, Mensah has made 86 appearances for Ghana and scored five goals.
The 33-year-old was a member of the Black Stars squads that played in the World Cup in Germany in 2006 and 2010 in South Africa.
“John is a central defender with a résumé that speaks for itself. His experience and routine will give us and our younger players very much and we are delighted to have him here,” Azad Budak, sporting director of the club said.
