The newly-appointed sports minister has revealed that he’ll put his feet down to ensure the Black Stars coach spends quality time in the country

Ghana’s Youth and Sports minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuije says he will ensure that Black Stars coach Avram Grant spends quality time in the country to impact knowledge on local coaches.

Grant, 60, has come under intense criticism from a large section of Ghanaians following his decision to stay abroad to do his work, returning to the country only when the Black Stars have an assignment.

“It is my conviction that our local coaches have the ability to excel and do better than the foreign coaches,” Vanderpuije told Starr FM.

“We have a foreign coach now and I don’t have a problem with him [Avram Grant]. I think he is a wonderful coach but I am going to insist that he spends lot more of his time in Ghana to transfer knowledge and technical know-how to our coaches in order to build them up,” he added.

Grant organised his first seminar for local coaches last November but left the country few days later after Ghana edged past Comoros in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

He is yet to return to the country three months afterwards. Grant’s two-and-half-year contract with Ghana runs out in January 2017.
