Fire destroys Abuja slum; 8-month-old baby killed

joyonlineThe scale of the fire meant that residents had to assist the firefighters to put out the flames.

This would be the second time the Abuja slum, which is close to the Central Business District, has been hit by a fire disaster.

Reports indicate that the Kantamanto Market, which is close to the slum, also suffered substantial destruction from the fire.

Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Prince Bill Anaglatey, told reporters at the scene that he was not surprised about the incident because of the haphazard nature of the settlement.

He has recommended relocation of the slum dwellers to forestall a recurrence.

The slum is mostly inhabited by head porters, popularly called ‘Kayayei’.

As at 6:00am Wednesday, firefighters were still trying to douse flames from Tuesday’s fire, although it has been brought under control.
