CEPS destroys seized items in Kumasi

The Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has destroyed large quantity of goods seized from importers for breach of import regulations.

These included second hand fridges, vehicle tyres, fruit drinks, pharmaceutical and chemical products, shoes, compact discs, bottles of whisky and clothing.

They were destroyed at the Dompoase landfill site in Kumasi under the joint supervision of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Energy Commission.

Assistant Commissioner for the Northern Sector Command, GRA, Isaac Kofi Toffah, said the action was meant to serve as a deterrent.

He said they would go to every length to ensure that there was compliance with the import regulations.

Mr. Victor Owusu, Public Affairs Manager of the Energy Commission, warned that second hand refrigerators would be seized because of their harmful effects on the environment and high energy consumption.

He advised the people to buy only standard refrigerators to help conserve energy.
