Striker Eric Bekoe says his return to the Ghana Premier League (GPL) will be characterised by scoring more goals- scoring intended to propel his new team, Sekondi Hasaacas, for a top-four finish.
Last Saturday, the 29-year-old striker and one-time goal-king in the Premier League, marked his return with a brace to propel Hasaacas to a 4-2 win over debutants, Techiman City, at the Essipon Stadium. And goal-hungry Bekoe is promising more exploits.
“The brand Bekoe is synonymous with goalscoring, so that is what the fans of the Premier League should expect this season. I’ve proved not just in Ghana that the brand Bekoe always comes with goalscoring and that is what I’m in this competition to do,” he told the Graphic sports.
“I’m grateful to God for the good start and glad that the plan of getting Hasaacas among the best sides this season is shaping up,” the former Kotoko hit man told the Graphic Sports in an interview.
He lamented that his surprise return to the GPL had been tagged as the ‘return of the old guards’ but he was ready to turn that unfair comment into something positive as he would strive to leave his mark on the league yet again.
“It’s unfortunate that experience is often seen as old and that is how I’ve been tagged. Instead of reacting to such comments, I prefer to let my performance on the pitch do the talking,” the 2007/2008 Premier League top scorer said.
He expressed optimism that Hasaacas would be a force to be reckoned with once the team had their cohesion.
“We are working towards the cohesion of the team and I bet once we get it off, Hasaacas will be the team to beat, all things being equal.”
Indeed, his coach, Yusif Basigi was also thrilled about the performance of both Bekoe and Papa Arko — who also scored last Sunday — and described their experience as ‘key’ to the team.
Coach Basigi indicated that the Giants of the West would rely on the experience of the duo to meet their target of a top four finish this season.
“There is no doubt that Bekoe and Arko are quality players and already it is beginning to show. I think they bring a lot to the table and their presence as well as other similar experienced players in the GPL will make this season’s competition very exciting.”
