What is the reason we become unhappy? There are many reasons, but above all else we become unhappy whenever we aren’t true to ourselves.
Put simply, being true to yourself means doing the things you love doing. But to know what it is that you love to do, you need to know yourself and what makes you tick.
The more we understand ourselves and our natures, the easier it is to do the things that will make us happy. Sounds simple right? Yet so many of us all too easily lose sight of our identity. Consequently, we grow deeply unhappy.
There are also a lot of variables involved when it comes to doing whatever makes us happy. Sometimes, we just cannot get up and do whatever we want to do. Sometimes, there are obstacles in the way.
There are, however, 10 effective ways in which you can boost your happiness right now. Let’s take a look at them.
Love Your Job
I always think of my favourite movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles whenever I think of people who love what they do for a living. In the film, John Candy’s character expresses my own approach to work: “Like your job – love your partner.”
Personally, I think it’s all the same if you love your job – as long as you love your partner even more!
As Steve Jobs pointed out, we spend most of our lives at work – at least half of it anyway. That’s a heck of a lot of time. And if you hate you job, it’s going to make you feel pretty lousy.
Getting yourself a job you love is not as hard as you might think. You first of all need to identify what kind of job you would love to do, before setting a series of goals that will help you to secure it.
And know this: You are never too late.
It’s common for unhappy people to spend a lot of time indoors. But excessive amount of time spent indoors just makes your mood even worse.
Vitamin D, which we get from the sunshine, can improve your mood and ease the symptoms of depression. Not just that, but who doesn’t feel better when they get outside and soak up a bit of nature?
The key for you right now might be getting the motivation to get up and leave the house. If so, just set yourself a of spending a minimum of ten minutes outside your house and take it from there.
Another good tip on how to increase happiness is to simply fake it!
Is it possible to fake happiness? Not exactly. But if you start to deliberately act happy, you will eventually start to feel happy for real.
If this sounds like bogus advice, just consider this: As human beings we love consistency. We loathe consistency because we don’t want our lives to be erratic and chaotic. So by faking happiness, you will eventually adjust your mindset so that it is compatible with your actions. In other words, act cheerful and you will become cheerful.
Have A Positive Attitude
Out of 10, how positive would you say you were today? And how about yesterday? Or last week? How positive were you then?
If your answer is below 5, things need to change. Drastically.
Is life what you make of it? For sure it is! People who are positive achieve more than negative people simply because positive people take action.
Negative people, on the other hand, hesitate hesitate hesitate – and then decide “what’s the point?”
Be positive. Be optimistic. Good things will come.
Boost Your Energy
Another good tip on how to increase happiness is to boost your energy.
Energy is important for your overall happiness. When we’re feeling fatigued and exhausted, we don’t feel happy. We feel low, and useless. We don’t want to do anything. We can’t even lift ourselves out of bed!
More energy means a sharper mind and body. You want to get up and Do.
There are many ways you can get more energy. Three of the most obvious are to sleep more, eat a better diet, and exercise.
Watch A Funny Movie
This is such a simple but effective way of boosting your happiness. Instead of watching the news tonight or flicking through Facebook, stick your favourite comedy movie on and have a giggle.
Appreciate What You Already Have
Another important tip on how to increase happiness is to appreciate what you have already. I remember a few years back I was feeling really low because I didn’t have what other people had. I didn’t have my friends’ jobs, their husbands, their cars, their 3 vacations a year et cetera. Instead of focusing on my own life and the things I did have, I was obsessing over other people who I assumed were happy.
Who is to say how anyone is feeling? Just because your friend has a massive bank account, it doesn’t automatically mean that she is happy.
Stop desiring what others have and instead be grateful for all the fantastic things you do have. Be grateful for your health. Be grateful for having friends and family. Make a list of all the things you have to be grateful for and appreciate it.
Let Go Of The Past
This is one of the most important tips on how to increase happiness. If you’re letting the past define you, it could be that which is leaving you unhappy. A failure to close the book on our past stops us from moving on and being happy. If we can’t let go, what chance have we got of ever evolving?
If there is something or someone from your past who hurt you, and who you still haven’t forgiven, now is the time to do it. Forgive and forget. Let go of your ties to the past. Move on. Free yourself. Don’t become the sum total of your negative experiences.
How much fun would you say you’re having at the moment? A lot? A bit? None at all?
Film director Woody Allen once quipped that “most of the time I don’t have very much fun, and the rest of the time I have no fun at all.”
It’s funny, yeah? And that’s what you have to do during your pursuit of happiness – let loose. Have fun. Crack jokes.
It’s no use saying “but I’ll have fun once I’m happy again.”
No! Have fun NOW! Do it!
Do What You Love To Do
Lastly, our final tip on how to increase happiness is to do something you love to do! Reconnect with your passions. Remember what it was that you loved about life in the first place. Be like a child again. Have some FUN.
And if you argue that you don’t have the time, you’re wrong. And you know it. Time can be made. Make it. You won’t regret it.
